5 Sept 2017, Jalan Duta Court Building – Volunteers from PENGASIH congregated here at 9:00 am to show their love and support for PENGASIH. Datuk Yunus Pathi who founded the centre 26 years ago was present at court to file a case that was made against PENGASIH by STLR Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of KHAZANAH National Bhd. STLR is trying to evict PENGASIH from its current premises to the proposed facility in Cinta Manis, Bentong.

PENGASIH was supposed to have relocated to a new facility which was built by STLR Sdn. Bhd. in 2015 after STLR reclaimed part of the land on which PENGASIH operates.

PENGASIH which is an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) specialises in rehabilitation of drug users and other social ills. The organisation which is run by former drug addicts is unique in that all members of staff are in recovery themselves.

The facility which is spread across approximately 7 hectares comprises of dormitories, a hospice, a surau (community mosque), headquarters, kitchen and dining, a secondary treatment facility and a multi-purpose hall. The proposed facility in Pahang was found to be ill-equipped, unsafe and not conducive for operating a rehabilitation centre upon inspection by PENGASIH.

Volunteers from the PENGASIH network such as Aman Jaya in Ipoh, Melaka and Bukit Beruntung were picketing outside the court house appealing to the Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Najib Razak, to intervene.

Members of the media interviewed Datuk Yunus and Shahrir Subki who is on the Board of Trustees of PENGASIH. The crowd dispersed shortly after 10:30 am.

15 July 2017, Rumah Pengasih Kuala Lumpur –  Malaysia is synonymous with food. If you take a stroll down any street you will see stalls selling everything from banana fritters to barbecued corn. There is also a mamak around every corner where Malaysians come to enjoy their favourite teh tarik and roti canai.

Food plays a crucial role in our culture. Asking whether one has eaten is the norm when meeting a friend or colleague because it is a sign of our love and concern towards others.

At Pengasih, we always share the love. What better way than to celebrate Hari Raya than to host our annual Hari Raya Open House?

This year saw a total of 22 stalls offering all kinds of local mouth-watering delicacies. The stalls were comprised of Static Groups (small groups of residents managed by their respective case officers), Teduhan Kasih (PENGASIH half-way houses throughout the country), Family Support Group and X-Comm (Pengasih Alumni) to name a few.

Hari Raya Open House 2017

Things are finally back to normal now that the Raya festivities are over. What’s that? You didn’t get to celebrate with us, you say? Don’t fret. We definitely want you to lepak and makan-makan with us.

So…

We will be having our annual Hari Raya Open House on 17 July 2017 from 10:30am – 3:00pm.

Approximately 20 stalls will be serving a myriad of local dishes such as Laksa, Nasi Dagang, Satay, Popiah, ice-cream and drinks to name a few.

The stalls will be managed independently by Static Groups (the smaller groups of residents which are assigned to individual Case Officers), the various Teduhan Kasih centres across the country, ex-comm (former clients who have graduated from Pengasih) and a number of external sponsors.

Keep yourselves free and we hope to see you there.

Post Hari Raya Staff Group Sharing Session

6 July 2017, Rumah Pengasih Kuala Lumpur – Support groups are crucial in sustaining recovery. Those of us in recovery know that we require some form of communal support hence the saying You can do it but you can’t do it alone.

Group therapy and sharing sessions are highly encouraged here at Pengasih. Right from the start of the day there are morning meetings, departmental meetings, wrap-up’s, counselling and peer groups etc.

As staff, we too practise sharing. We have daily clinical meetings. Every Thursday we have a staff group where all the staff can speak about anything they wish to share with the rest.

As festivities and events can be stressful to those of us in recovery, we make it a point to have a post Hari Raya sharing session every year.

The group commenced at 3:00 pm as Hanif Talib took the floor. After a number of staff related their experiences, Datuk Yunus (Yeop) gave a short speech.

Chef Nazaruddin prepared a delicious serving of Rendang Ayam and Ketupat for tea before the group adjourned.

2 July 2017, Rumah Pengasih Kuala Lumpur – At Rumah Pengasih one often hears the term The Power of Sharing and Sharing is Caring over and over again. Residents are encouraged to talk about their past, troubles and concerns as it helps alleviate the burden and shame of those experiences.

Most session at Rumah Pengasih have an element of sharing. This can be observed in Morning Meeting’s, Wrap-Up’s, Static Group’s and One-to-One’s.

In recovery, we need the support of each another.

Sharing is cathartic. In order for others to help, one must be open and accepting of themselves and others.

There is no doubt that festivities are a stressful time for those in recovery. After Hari Raya there is a special Wrap-Up Perdana for residents to share their feelings of celebrating Hari Raya in recovery.

Wrap-up Perdana is held on the immediate Sunday after Hari Raya in lieu of Weekend Wrap-Up.

This year saw many residents speaking about celebrating their first sober Hari Raya.

Some were disappointed that they couldn’t celebrate Hari Raya with their families back home however were glad that their families took the effort to visit them here.

The Wrap-Up which was facilitated by Hafizi Harun and Azhar Rahman came to a close at 11:00 pm.
