5 Sept 2017, Jalan Duta Court Building – Volunteers from PENGASIH congregated here at 9:00 am to show their love and support for PENGASIH. Datuk Yunus Pathi who founded the centre 26 years ago was present at court to file a case that was made against PENGASIH by STLR Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of KHAZANAH National Bhd. STLR is trying to evict PENGASIH from its current premises to the proposed facility in Cinta Manis, Bentong.
PENGASIH was supposed to have relocated to a new facility which was built by STLR Sdn. Bhd. in 2015 after STLR reclaimed part of the land on which PENGASIH operates.
PENGASIH which is an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) specialises in rehabilitation of drug users and other social ills. The organisation which is run by former drug addicts is unique in that all members of staff are in recovery themselves.
The facility which is spread across approximately 7 hectares comprises of dormitories, a hospice, a surau (community mosque), headquarters, kitchen and dining, a secondary treatment facility and a multi-purpose hall. The proposed facility in Pahang was found to be ill-equipped, unsafe and not conducive for operating a rehabilitation centre upon inspection by PENGASIH.
Volunteers from the PENGASIH network such as Aman Jaya in Ipoh, Melaka and Bukit Beruntung were picketing outside the court house appealing to the Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Najib Razak, to intervene.
Members of the media interviewed Datuk Yunus and Shahrir Subki who is on the Board of Trustees of PENGASIH. The crowd dispersed shortly after 10:30 am.
